OTTAWA COUNTY UNEMPLOYMENT
Ottawa Countys unemployment rate for September measured 3.0%. This rate is the
fourth lowest in Michigan for September, with unemployment rates ranging from 2.1%
in Livingston County to 7.7% in Roscommon County. From August to September,
seventy-nine counties saw their unemployment rates decrease. Over the past year,
jobless rates have decreased for sixty-seven of Michigans eighty-three counties.

GVSU PROGRAM
Grand Valley State University is proving its commitment to increasing access to
education with the addition of two TRIO Upward Bound Math-Science programs to
serve high school students in Wyoming and Detroit, helping them to strengthen their
STEM skills. GVSU now has 11 federal TRIO programs, the most of any Michigan
college or university that houses these programs. When the two new Upward Bound
Math-Science programs are operational, GVSUs 11 programs will serve more than 24-
hundred people in Grand Rapids and Detroit. Grants from the U.S. Department of
Education for Grand Valley's TRIO programs total $17.4 million over five years.
TRIO Upward Bound Math-Science programs serve high school students from lowincome families and those who would be first-generation college students.

NESSEL JOINS AG'S IN FILING
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel joined a coalition of 22 Attorneys General in
filing a friend of the court brief in Moore v. Harper, a case in which the U.S. Supreme
Court will decide whether to adopt the radical independent state legislature theory and
give state legislators the sole, unchecked authority to make election rules at the
expense of voters and other state institutions. The coalition is supporting North
Carolina, its voters, and voting-rights organizations in their challenge.

MCC GALLERY EXHIBIT
Mott Community Colleges Fine Arts Gallery will present an exhibition of a variety of
works from the Michigan Institute for Contemporary Arts titled MICA Visits MCC, from
November 7 through 22. There will be an Opening Reception at the Visual Arts and
Design Center Gallery Nov. 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. The Michigan Institute of
Contemporary Art is a non-profit organization based in Lansing, with a mission to
catalyze community transformation through the arts. MICA Gallery is dedicated to
featuring artists whose work represents a mix of progressive styles, social commentary,
experimentation, and innovation. The gallery provides exhibition opportunities for visual
artists, musicians, poets, and performance artists.

HORSEBACK RIDING
You can go horseback riding at Silver Lake State Park along the Lake Michigan
shoreline this month. Registration is open now at the state park in Mears. The
registration fee is $10 dollars per horse and 100 slots are available each day. Visit

GOVERNOR & DIXON CAMPAIGNING
This week, Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist will
continue the Getting Things Done road trip at , vote marches, rallies, and other events
throughout the state to talk with voters and share their vision for Michigan. Today, the
Governor has campaign stops in Grand Rapids at 1:00Pm and in Clawson at 4:00pm.
The governor will be joined by dignitaries and supporters at both stops.
Tudor Dixon will continue her bus tour throughout the state and will host a rally at
Cherry Capitol Airport in Traverse City TODAY. The rally will be held at at 6:00pm at
Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City.

BOAT CRASH
A boat crash on the Saint Clair River has claimed the life of one man. According to
reports, three men were fishing in an 18-foot Lund boat in the Saint Clair River around
10:30 p.m. on Saturday. A 67-year-old Algonac resident was manning the boat when it
hit a post. Officials say the crash injured the driver and a 72-year-old Harrison
Township resident. There was a third passenger... a 66-year-old Ira Township resident
who was pronounced dead at the scene. The Saint Clair County Detective Bureau is
still investigating the crash.

WHISKEY PLANT EXPANSION
A northern Michigan whiskey and bourbon maker is planning a major expansion
project, thanks in part to funding from the Michigan Economic Development
Corporation. The Traverse City Whiskey Company is planning on a 20 million dollar
investment for building a new facility in Elmwood Township, just across the border in
Leelanau County. The expansion will create 100 new jobs, and its supported by a grant
from the 750-thousand dollar grant from the Michigan Development Program. It also
means a new headquarters for T-C Whiskey.

NEW COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR
Leelanau County has officially welcomed its new county administrator. During a special
meeting on Friday, commissioners approved the contract to sign on their new
administrator Deborah Allen. She has worked with a handful of organizations across
northern Michigan for more than a decade and said she is hoping to use those
experiences to serve the county.

SEWAGE OVERFLOW
Quick action stopped a sewage overflow from draining into a pond in Ann Arbor. Ann
Arbor city staff was notified about sewage flowing out of a manhole cover near East
Ellsworth and Stone School roads around 2 p.m. on Sunday. During the investigation..
officials found a blockage in the sewage pipe from an abundance of sealing material
from a nearby private project. The overflow caused about 200-GALLONS of sewage to
overflow onto the ground, which drained into a catch basin. The sewage was
vacuumed up before it reached the nearby detention pond.

EX WMU OFFICER SENTENCED
A former Western Michigan University police officer , who was arrested for trying to
solicit a teenage girl for sex , has been sentenced to two days in jail with credit for time
served. 49-year-old Abraham Hohnke (Hown-key) will also serve five years of
probation. He was arrested during an online sting last Spring by the Kalamazoo
County Sheriff's office when investigators say the three men tried to solicit sex from
someone they thought was a 15-year-old girl, but it was really an undercover officer.
Hohnke resigned from the Western Michigan Department of Public Safety after he was
charged. He pleaded guilty to using a computer to commit a crime, but a charge of
accosting a child for immoral purposes was dismissed.

SOUTH LYON LOCKDOWN-2ND TIME
South Lyon High School was on lockdown Monday for the second time in a week after
a threatening message was written on a wall.
According to school administration, someone had written, I will shoot this school up
today on the wall in a bathroom. The school was searched, but nothing was found. On
October 25th, the school was locked down when someone wrote a similar threat in a
different bathroom.. it was later deemed to be non-credible.

BOY SCOUT LEADER CHARGED-MACOMB COUNTY
A former Boy Scouts leader has pleaded guilty to rape charges stemming from cases
that happened more than 20 years ago. The Attorney General's office says 51-year old
Mark Chapman, who lives in New York, pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal sexual
conduct in Macomb County Circuit Court Monday. Investigators say Chapman abused
one teenager at his house, the victim's house and at a church starting in 2000 and
continuing until the victim was a senior in high school. The other victim was eleven
years old when sexual assaults happened. Chapman faces between 10 and 20 years
in prison when he's sentenced in December.

DICKINSON COUNTY FATAL CRASH
Three people have been killed and three injured in a crash in the U-P's Dickinson
County on Sunday. The sheriff's office says a car heading north on Foster City Road
crossed the center line and hit another vehicle. A 52-year-old woman and her 56-yearold male passenger from Felch in the at-fault vehicle were killed and the driver of the
other car, a 46-year-old man from Norway was also killed. A 39-year-old woman in that
car and two children were taken to the hospital with injuries.
Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.

CAR BREAK-INS-W MI
Six teens have been arrested for breaking into vehicles over the weekend in Cutlerville
in west Michigan. The Kent County Sheriff's Office says teens wearing ski masks were
caught trying to open vehicle doors in Gaines Township. Deputies found a stolen
vehicle with three teens inside that had been stolen from Wyoming. A fourth teen ran.
They say a K-9 tracked down two teens in the woods, while another one surrendered.
Four boys and two girls from Grand Rapids, ranging in age from 14 to 16, were
arrested.

POWERBALL
There was no big powerball winner last night , so Wednesday night's jackpot grows to
one-point-two Billion dollars. There was a one million dollar winner in Michigan.

LATEST POLITICAL POLL
Governor Gretchen Whitmer continues to lead Republican challenger Tudor Dixon in
the latest Detroit News and W-D-I-V poll... with just one week before Election Day.
According to the poll, Whitmer holds a 9 point edge. 52-percent of the six hundred likely
voters support Whitmer... while 43-percent favor Dixon. 3-percent are backing a third
party candidate and 2-percent remain undecided.
Dixon has trimmed what was once a 17 point lead in September.
The poll also shows Attorney General Dana Nessel and Republican challenger Matt
DePerno in a statistical tossup. Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson leads GOP
candidate Kristina Karamo by 10 points.

NAACP LAWSUIT-KARAMO
The Detroit Branch of the NAACP, meeting with reporters today -- to address the
lawsuit filed by Michigan Secretary of State candidate Kristina Karamo last week. It
asks a judge to require residents of Detroit to vote in person -- or obtain their ballots in
person at the clerk's office. It's unlikely the suit will be successful because it conflicts
with Michigan's constitution, which provides voters the right to "no-reason" absentee
voting in-person or by mail. Karamo says she wants to make sure Detroit election
officials can distinguish between "lawful" votes and "unlawful" votes.

BICYCLIST KILLED-OLD MISSION PENINSULA
A 63-year-old woman riding a bike was hit and killed by a vehicle Monday morning on
Old Mission Peninsula. Grand Traverse County sheriff's deputies say 63-year-old
Katherine Hardy died after being hit by a vehicle. The accident is being investigated.

AMAZON DETROIT DELAY-DETROIT
A new Amazon fulfillment center in Detroit WON'T open in time for the holiday season.
According to the free press, the recently-completed facility -- built at the old state
fairgrounds on 8 Mile near Woodward -- will now open in the new year.
Construction began in 2020 at the massive 3.8-million-square-foot building. It's set to
employ over 1,000 people.
An Amazon spokesperson didn't give a reason for why the center won't open on time. A
Detroit official told the free press the city isn't worried about the postponed opening.

POSTAL SERVICE REWARD FOR ATTACK ON POSTAL WORKER-DETROIT
The U-S Postal Inspection Service is offering a reward of up to 50 THOUSAND dollars
for information leading to the arrest of a suspect who robbed a mail carrier at gunpoint
in Detroit.
The robbery happened around 1 p.m. last Wednesday on the city's west side.
Police are searching for a man last seen wearing a dark hoodie, blue and black striped
pajama pants, and a black neck gaiter. The suspect is said to be 5-foot-11 and in his
20s... he allegedly used a semiautomatic pistol during the robbery.
