NORTH MICHIGAN FIRE
A deadly fire under investigation near Traverse City. Fire officials report it broke out
around 12-30 on Sunday morning.... at a home at the Green River Trout Farm located
in Antrim Countys Chestonia Township, about 45 miles northeast of Traverse City. First
responders found a person and a dog dead inside the house. The fire also destroyed
the home. Michigan State Police are helping in the investigation. The victim's name has
not been released.
SKIING
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! Skiers and ski hill operators are keeping their fingers
-- and ski tips -- crossed for more snow to get more of the the ski season started. Only
the "Porkies" in the Porcupine Mountains near Ontonagon in the far northwest Upper
Peninsula, Ski Brule in Ironwood, and the Black River Basin at the Bessemer Ski Area,
both more central northwest U-P are open. A number of ski areas in southeast
Michigan are targeting openings soon.
ZOO LIGHTS
Wild Lights at the Detroit Zoo has started for the tenth consecutive year. The annual
event features millions of twinkling holiday lights across dozens of expertly designed
displays throughout the Zoo. Visitors can enjoy an Enchanted Trail, Toyland, and a
Wild Lights Lodge, among many other displays. General admission tickets for Wild
Lights range from $17 to $24, based on the time and day, and can be purchased in
advance by visiting wildlights.detroitzoo.org.
DOMESTIC TERRORISM REPORT
Michigan Senator Gary Peters, Chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and
Governmental Affairs Committee, releasing a new report detailing the results of his
investigation into the rise of domestic terrorism, including white supremacist and antigovernment violence. The report finding the Department of Homeland Security and FBI
failing to effectively track and report data on the domestic terrorism threat despite being
required to do so by a 2019 law spearheaded by Peters. The investigation also finding
the lack of data has limited Congress ability to determine whether counter-terrorism
agencies are using resources to effectively address the growing threat posed by
domestic terrorism.
DTE RATE HIKE
Utility bills will be going up for more than two million DTE Energy customers. The
Michigan Public Service Commission Friday giving DTE authorization to implement a
$30.5-million-dollar rate increase to help pay for investments in the distribution and
generation systems. DTE was asking for a $388-million-dollar increase. Most
customers will see their bills go up by less than a dollar each month.
BUSY AIRPORT
The busiest time of the year at Detroit Metro Airport is expected to start this week.
Airport executives say they expect to see more than two million travelers over the
Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's holidays in what will be the busiest holiday
period in three years. More than 800-THOUSAND people are expected to pass through
the airport next week. People going through the Evans Terminal will see new dining
options, including a new Outback Steakhouse, which was part of a $21-MILLION dollar
redevelopment project.
DRUG BUST
The feds busting an illegal drug distribution ring involving two Metro Detroit doctors.
The U.S. Attorney's office says Angelo Foster and Brandy King of Detroit and Edward
King of Northville ran pain clinics including Priority One Health Management, Lincoln
Park Health Management, and Priority One Health Essentials, worked with Latrina
Williams of Sterling Heights to recruit patients to see two out state doctors via
telehealth. Investigators say the doctors prescribed more than 500-thousand
oxycodone, percocet and hydrocodone pills to patients who had no legitimate medical
need for the drugs. The pills have a street value of more than $2.6 MILLION dollars.
The indictments charges the six suspects with conspiracy.
ONLINE GAMBLING
Online gambling continues to BOOM in Michigan. New numbers are out from the
Michigan Gaming Control Board. They say Michigan commercial and tribal operators
reported combined total gross receipts and gross sports betting receipts of $190.2
MILLION dollars during the month of October. Receipts increased 7.7 percent
compared with September results of $176.5 MILLION dollars. The board says internet
gaming gross receipts for October were a Michigan record $141 MILLION dollars. The
previous internet gaming gross receipts monthly record of $132.4 MILLION dollars was
set in April.
THANKSGIVING FAVORITES
As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches many people are looking for ways to cut their
budget. Seven out of 10 Americans say they have been looking for more budget
friendly holiday meal options since inflation is getting the best of them, and nearly half
say theyre trying a vegan alternative to turkey this year. But despite the costs, some
things will not disappear from the holiday table here in Michigan. Turkey or not, gravy is
the most popular Thanksgiving food in our state. Gravy even beats out turkey. The
least popular food - glazed carrots -according to the company Crestline. They
specialize in promotional products. They say across the country the worst thing you can
give thanksgiving guests are sweet potato casseroles with marshmallows. They say
thats the most disliked holiday food.
BIZ OWNERS LETTER
When Congress gets back to work theyll find a letter waiting for them from thousands
small business owners. Over 165 of those business owners are from Michigan. Theyre
asking Congress to pass legislation permitting the Small Business Administration to
tweak its focus creating programs that would help small business owners with modern
day issues. Congress has not authorized the SBA to make changes in some 22 years.
The small business owners would like the SBA to be able to modernize technical
support for entrepreneurs to ensure that access to capitol meets their needs and to
help small companies with marketing and communications strategies. The businesses
behind this campaign are part of the GOLDMAN SACHS 10-THOUSAND SMALL
BUSINESSES VOICES program.
NESSEL VIDEO
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is re-issuing her video that explains the
consequences of making threats against schools, following a recent increase in
incidents in Oakland County and around the state. In the video, Nessel explains the
potential charges people can face if they make a threat of violence. Nessel previously
issued the video in the wake of dozens of threats statewide after a mass shooting at
Oxford High School on November 30 resulted in four deaths and seven injuries.
VACCINE POLL
A new national poll conducted by C.S. Mott's Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor shows 1
in 7 parents haven't talked about vaccines with their child's primary care provider in the
last two years.
About half of those parents say they delayed or skipped doctor's appointments for their
child to avoid talking about vaccines. Clark says it's getting in the way of parents having
the conversation with the doctor and the kids getting the vaccine. 80% of parents said
they talked with their child's doctor about vaccines required for school... but NOT
COVID and flu shots.
GAS PRICES
Gas prices continue to fall ahead of Thanksgiving travel... but Michigan residents are
projected to pay record prices at the pump for the holiday.
According to Triple A, the average price for a gallon of regular gas across the state is
3.81 -- a 23-cent slide from a week ago. If that price holds, it will be the highest price
per gallon Michigan drivers have ever paid on Thanksgiving.
The record is 3.61 -- set in 2012.
WARREN HOUSE FIRE
A man was injured after a garage and house fire broke out last evening in Warren .
The family says they were watching TV when they spotted the flames coming from their
garage.
A man suffered facial injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
Officials say a frozen hydrant on the block caused water supply problems in battling
that fire. The cause is being investigated.
OXFORD STUDENTS VISIT UVALDE
A group of Michigan high school students supporting children who were victim to gun
violence. 18 Oxford High School students traveled to Uvalde Saturday.. supporting the
victims of the Uvalde school shooting.
The Oxford students were able to contact different companies through social media to
collect donations and fund their trip. Several companies donated to aid the children --
including 11 pallets of fleece material from JoAnn Fabrics, airline miles from American
Airlines and three Detroit Lions football players donated 1-thousand dollars each.
PUP OVERDOSE
Coldwater firefighters in mid southern lower Michigan are being credited with saving a
puppy after it overdosed on fentanyl. The puppy named Whip got into a fentanyl
medicine patch, according to Coldwater Firefighters Local 25-55 on Facebook. The
puppy's owners took her to the fire station and firefighters gave her two doses of
Narcan....which is used for overdoses....usually for people.
The firefighters say the puppy will be monitored until her follow up with her veterinarian.
RECORD SNOW-W MI
Lots of snow hit west Michigan and it broke some records. Most snow hit between
Thursday and Saturday. Snowfall between Wednesday through Sunday totaled 24.4
inches at Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids. It's a record for 7 or
more inches of snow three days in a row. So far, it's the second highest snow total for
November on record.
STAFFORD CONCUSSION
Former Lions and current Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford could be
facing a second concussion in two weeks.
Stafford was pulled from the third quarter of the Rams' game against the New Orleans
Saints yesterday as team personnel evaluated him for a concussion.
This comes just two days after he was cleared to return from the same injury.
Stafford went into the NFL's concussion protocol 12 days ago following a medical
examination and missed the defending champions' loss to Arizona in Week 10.
PARTY STORE FIRE-N MI
In Cheboygan County, there was a major structure fire over the weekend. Pat & Gary's
Party Store on Straits Highway was on fire early Saturday morning. Several fire
departments responded to the fire. Some nearby buildings also received damage.
SHARK TANK
Two Traverse City brothers received a $200-thousand dollar investment Friday night on
ABC's "Shark Tank." This came after Dakota and Garret Porter pitched their business,
"Action Glow" a patented L-E-D lighting system for sporting equipment , including
snowboards, skate boards, and kayaks. They accepted the deal from Shark Robert
Herjavec (Her-ja-vac). Family and friends held a watch party at the City Opera House in
Traverse City.
THANKSGIVING MEALS-GRAND RAPIDS
A Thanksgiving meal was served to some 300 homeless and recovering addicts in
Grand Rapids Heartside community on Sunday by the nonprofit Guiding Light. WOOD
TV reports it's part of the organization's annual outreach to community members.
Guiding Light will also serve free meals at Christmas time.
EMPTY BOWLS-PETOSKEY
The 29th Empty Bowls Luncheon takes place today at Stafford's Perry Hotel in
Petoskey. Tickets are $35 dollars and proceeds help the Manna Food Project in Emma
County.
BEAT BUCKEYES
And so it begins. The big game between Michigan and Ohio State isn't until Saturday
in Columbus, but Governor Gretchen Whitmer has already declared Saturday as "Beat
the Buckeyes Day" in Michigan. Whitmer says qyote-"There is no better Michigan
tradition than watching the Wolverines beat that team down south."
First played in 1897, the Wolverines lead the series 59-51-6. In 2021, the Michigan
Wolverines defeated the Buckeyes in a 42-27 victory.
