BIDEN MICHIGAN WRAP UP
President Joe Biden, touting manufacturing and computer chips in Bay City on
Tuesday. He toured and spoke at SK Siltron, a chip facility -- talking about the passage
of a number of his initiatives including the CHIP Act. The law funds more than $52
billion in subsidies and $24 billion in tax credits for companies to make chips in the U.S.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer and other state lawmakers were on hand at the event.
CRUMBLEY UPDATE
The Michigan Supreme Court has stepped in and ordered a delay in the start of the
criminal trials of James and Jennifer Crumbley -- the parents of admitted Oxford High
School shooter Ethan Crumbley. The state's high court has ordered the Court of
Appeals to re-examine if charges against the Crumbley's are even appropriate. Both
James and Jennifer Crumbley face involuntary manslaughter charges for allegedly
leaving the gun their son used open and accessible to him, and then not letting school
officials know about it during a disciplinary meeting at the school the morning of the
shootings.
OAKCO CRASH DEATH
A man from the Thumb region has died after a crash in Oakland County. Michigan
State Police took a 911 call around 8:30 Tuesday morning from a driver who stopped to
check on a vehicle that was in a ditch along Grange Hall Road near Ortonville Road.
State Police say the 33-year old driver who crashed was dead at the scene. The
investigation showed the driver was coming to a sharp curve in the road when his car
went off the road and hit two trees. Alcohol bottles were inside the vehicle, but it's not
clear if the man had been drinking.
SNOWMOBILE SALES
Snowmobile season kicks off on Thursday on trails in Michigan, but if you want to buy a
new snowmobile... they might be hard to come by. Extreme Power Sports salesman
Brody Markovich, in Gaylord, says supply chain issues have hit them hard. Markovich
expects the supply chain issues to be a problem for a couple more years, but he says
people are getting out and having fun.
XMAS TREE SAFETY
Thousands of people across Michigan are headed to farms to cut down their Christmas
trees... prompting a message from local fire departments: water your tree, so they don't
have to. St. Clair Shores fire chief James Piper says natural-cut trees dry out extremely
quickly... which is why it's important to check your tree stand every day to make sure
there's enough water in it. Piper says people should also turn off the lights on their tree
when they go to bed, use modern LED lights, and obviously not put candles or old
fashioned lights on your tree. For outdoor Christmas decorations -- Piper says its
important to make sure they're in proper working order.
OXFORD ONE YEAR LATER
Flags are being lowered to half staff statewide on public buildings and grounds to honor
the victims of the Oxford shooting, which occurred one year ago today. The State of
Michigan will join in a moment of silence today at 12:51p.m. to honor the students.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer says it's been one year since we lost four beautiful young
souls in Oxford and one year since a community was changed forever. She says as we
mark one year since that terrible day, let us reaffirm our commitment to healing and
supporting the Oxford community.
ETHAN CRUMBLEY
Ethan Crumbly will stay put in the Oakland County Jail and not be moved to the
county's juvenile facility, "Children's Village."
Tuesday's ruling came a day ahead of the one-year anniversary of the Oxford School
shooting that killed four.
On October 24th, Crumbly pleaded guilty to all charges in connection with the
November 2021 mass shooting.
The judge Tuesday also tentatively rescheduled to February 10th a hearing at which
Crumby's lawyers can argue why their client should ultimately have the chance of
parole.
A sentencing date has not been set.
WIND ADVISORY SE MI
It's going to be a windy day in southeast Michigan. The National Weather Service has
issued a wind advisory until 10 o'clock tonight for all of southeastern Michigan. Wind
gusts of up to 45 miles per hour are possible.
The weather service says the winds will be strong enough to bring down tree limbs,
blow around unsecured objects outside homes, and cause power outages.
TRUCKER FOUND DEAD-I-75 DETROIT
An investigation continues this morning after a trucker was found dead in his rig on I-75
yesterday evening.
Just before 7 o'clock, Michigan State Police found a semi truck blocking the left lane of
southbound I-75 near Schaefer Highway. Police say when they entered the truck, the
driver didn't have a pulse.
Troopers used Narcan to try and revive the driver... eventually performing C-P-R and
using an A-E-D. The life saving measures did not work, and the 30-year-old driver from
Taylor died on the scene.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the driver's cause of death.
CHILD PORN
A Holland man is now in custody after he was caught with hundreds of images of child
pornography, including evidence of sexually exploitation of a four year old girl on his
phone.
37-year old Jonathan Thomas Burgett has a long history of this behavior according to
the U.S. District Judge and has received treatment in the past.
Burgett was sentenced to 30 years behind bars -- with an additional 5 years of
supervised release after his sentence.
PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY
The Michigan State senate has voted to move up Michigan's presidential primary. The
state primary is now held the second Tuesday of March, but this would move it to the
second Tuesday in February and it would make Michigan one of the first presidential
primaries in the country. The bill has to pass the state house and be approved by both
national parties.
DEARBORN BODY
Police in Tennessee say the woman found dead in the trunk of a car in Dearborn
suffered from a domestic violence incident before being killed.
Murfreesboro police say 31-year-old Eleni Kassa -- whose body was discovered after a
police chase ended in a crash Sunday -- was reported missing after she didn't pick her
daughter up from school.
Officials say Kassa and her girlfriend -- 36-year-old Dominique Hardwick -- got in an
argument at Kassa's apartment before Hardwick drove to Michigan.
Kassa's body was found in the trunk of Hardwick's car... after Hardwic led police on a
chase and crashed when they tried to pull her over Sunday. Hardwick took her own life
after the crash. An investigation continues.
CLARE MURDER SENTENCE
In Clare County, a woman who pled guilty earlier this year to murder charges was
sentenced. 55-year-old Judy Boyer was given life in prison. She was given the
sentence for the murders of four people in October of 2021....including her father, sister
and two others at a home in downtown Clare.
COVID-MI
There are more than 88-hundred new cases of COVID-19 in Michigan and 113 more
covid deaths. Health officials say many viral illnesses are on the rise, like the flu,
R.S.V. and Covid. Many of these have the same cold-like symptoms, runny nose,
coughing , sneezing and fever. They recommend you stay home if you feel ill, use
good hand hygiene, get your flu shot and get updated on your covid boosters.
STATE POLICE POST TRAVERSE CITY TO REOPEN
It looks like Traverse City will once again have a full time state police post, with the
14th Street facility set to reopen and have full time assigned troopers return after more
than a decade. The Traverse City post was one of dozens of locations in the state
targeted for closures and reductions as part of cost cutting under Governor Rick
Snyder. Under the new reorganization, the Traverse City post will serve Grand
Traverse, Leelanau and Benzie counties.
GOLF COURSE DAMAGE-NEAR PLAINWELL
A golf course near Plainwell, in southwest Michigan, has been damaged by vandals. In
a Facebook post, the Lake Doster Golf Club says they will most likely have temporary
greens for next year with over 75-thousand dollars worth of damage to greens six and
seven. They say they filed a police report and are working to come up with a reward
for someone who can identify whoever did the damage.
