MICHIGAN IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS
Michigan football fans will be able to watch the Wolverines play in the College Football
Playoff. The U of M will play TCU on New Years eve. The winner will advance to the
championship game. Michigan won its second straight Big Ten Championship on
Saturday night. The university says
its ticket allotment for the Fiesta Bowl is sold out. Football season ticket holders and
athletic donors had the opportunity to pre-request tickets.
RESTAURANT MINIMUM WAGE LEGISLATION
State lawmakers are expected to debate legislation this week that will be affecting
restaurant owners and some workers. Northern Michigan Senator Wayne Schmidt has
introduced a bill that could stop a potential big jump in the minimum wage for workers
who receive tips. Restaurant owners have been fighting the minimum wage increase.
Justin Winslow, President and CEO of the Michigan Restaurant & Lodging Association
says the increase could lead to mass layoffs in the service industry.
SHOOTING NEAR WESTERN MICHIGAN UNIVERSITY
A shooting near campus leaves Western Michigan University staff and students on high
alert. The university posted an advisory early Sunday moring to *exercise caution* in
the area. Police said they found a 28-year-old Lansing resident with a gunshot wound
to the shoulder. A suspect remains on the run. The victim is expected to survive.
ETHNIC INTIMIDATION CHARGE
A Dearborn man charged for alleged anti-Semetic threats and remarks he made
outside of a Bloomfield Township pre-school and Synagogue.
Oakland County prosecutors charged Hassan Chokr with two counts of ethnic
intimidation. The 35-year-old is accused of making racist threats and anti-semetic
remarks to parents, young children and security personnel at Temple Beth El preschool
Friday morning. Chokr was taken into custody by the Dearborn Police Department. He
remains behind bars awaiting arraignment.
PATHFINDER JOBS PORTAL
The state is touting an online career exploration tool that prepares those looking for a
new job. It's called Pathfinder . The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic
Opportunity's Office of Employment and Training says there are more than 100-
thousand jobs on the site right now. Pathfinder was recently updated to include
credential information from other state agencies so job seekers can see if licenses or
certificates are needed for a certain occupation. They say all of this information is
intended to help students of all ages, parents, school staff and career counselors make
informed choices about educational and career options. All of this as the governor's
office encourages Michiganders to explore the many career pathways available to them
during Career Exploration and Awareness Month.
MOBILE HOME FIRES -NOVI
Firefighters in Novi in Metro Detroit are working to contain a fire burning three mobile
homes.
The fire broke out in the homes on Branton Street near Haggerty Road and 12 Mile.
There's no word on any injuries caused by the fire.
FUEL SPILL-NEAR KALAMAZOO
About 100 gallons of fuel spilled near Kalamazoo Sunday afternoon. Oshtemo
Professional Firefighters Local 52-40 says on Facebook that a fuel tank strap broke on
a semi truck causing the fuel tank to drag and spill on M-43 in Oshtemo Township.
They say an emergency HAZMAT company was called to decontaminate the area.
GAS PRICES
Gas prices across Michigan continue to slide headed into the new work week and
holiday season.
According to Triple A, the average price for a gallon of regular gas across the state is
3.44 -- down 20 cents from a week ago and 79 CENTS from this time last month.
The most expensive places to buy gas in the state are Jackson, Traverse City, and
Grand Rapids. The cheapest are Lansing, Flint, and... Metro Detroit.
SOUTHFIELD CHASE-SHOOT AT POLICE
Two people have been arrested following a police chase with a shot fired this morning
at police in Southfield.
Southfield Police say that three people were in the car during the chase and the vehicle
was stolen.
One person in the car fired a shot at police during the chase...
One of the two people in custody fired the shot... but a third suspect is still on the loose.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE COURT-KENT COUNTY
In west Michigan, Kent County plans to have a domestic violence court. The county
commissioners reportedly will dedicate four million in American Rescue Plan funding
for the court. Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker says the goal is to reduce domestic
violence homicides.
GRAND TRAVERSE HIT & RUN
The Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office says the located the vehicle involved in a
hit and run crash Friday night. A 47-year-old from Long Lake Township is in custody
for leaving the scene of an accident. Deputies say a 23-year-old woman was seriously
injured after being hit by a car Friday evening.
TRIBAL HOMELAND SECURITY
A member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians will be one of the leaders
of the newly created Tribal Homeland Security Advisory Council. Kimberly Hapton will
serve as vice chair of the council. She is from Manistique and is the Unit 4 director for
the Sault Tribe. Hampton is one of 15 members who will advise on Homeland security
policies and practices that affect Indian Country.
FIREFIGHTER INJURED-U-P
One firefighter was injured fighting a house fire in the U-P's Chippewa County in
Dafter, near Sault Ste. Marie on Sunday morning. W-L-U-C reports fire officials say a
metal roof and the house construction made it tough to put the fire out. Everyone in the
home made it out safely. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
TC COMMISSIONERS
Traverse City Commissioners will vote tonight on approving contracts for multiple
programs and projects, including a three year extension with mobile medical response
for city ambulance services, construction work to expand the downtown volleyball
courts, and a contract for emergency repairs to a collapsed sewer main near
Washington and Wellington Streets.
THE VOICE-JACKSON COUNTY TEEN
A Jackson County teen will perform LIVE on national TV tonight for a chance to make
the finals of hit NBC singing competition "The Voice."
16-year-old Brayden Lape is a sophomore at Grass Lake High School. Last Monday,
his performance of Kane Brown's hit song "Homesick" earned him a spot in tonight's
semifinals.
Lape is the youngest of the eight remaining competitors. He will perform live tonight at
8 o'clock on NBC. The results show is tomorrow night.
