SHOOTING AT POLICE STATION
Michigan State Police are investigating after a deadly shooting inside the Dearborn
Police Department. The Police Chief says a 33-year old man from Dearborn drove to
the station, parked his car, went inside and then pointed a gun at officers. Police shot
the man who died at the hospital. A nine millimeter pistol was found near the man. A
motive is unclear, but police say he has a history of mental illness. Detectives were
trying to determine if the man had legally obtained the gun.

UM POLL:TEENS AND RELIGIOUS SERVICES
The Holiday season is a time when many people like to attend religious services. But a
new University of Michigan Children's Health study finds conflict can arise when teens
don't want to share those traditions with their family. Survey Co-director and Mott
Children's Hospital Pediatrician Dr. Susan Woolford says forcing kids to go to church or
temple could diminish any positive effects of participating in the services. Dr. Woolford
says the study found that the vast majority of parents believe teens can have a spiritual
relationship without being involved in organized religion.

UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS
This has been an issue for thousands of workers for months. Starting Wednesday, the
state is suspending collections on overpayments made to people seeking
unemployment benefits during the pandemic. Documents filed by the Unemployment
Insurance Agency say the suspension will apply to overpayment collections that were
paid to workers starting in March 2020, when the pandemic first started. The agency
said earlier this week it had issued more than 75-thousand overpayment waivers
related to pandemic aid to workers totaling more than one-half billion dollars.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING LEGISLATION
Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed a package of bills that will support the
development of more affordable housing. Whitmer says investments in affordable
housing lower costs for families and make Michigan communities more attractive and
easier places to live. The bills will help alleviate the shortage of affordable housing for
Michigan families by creating more affordable housing options, with a particular focus
on creating new housing units in cities.

FERRIS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Back to Back championships for Ferris State. The Bulldogs football team was crowned
NCAA Division Two football champions Saturday after defeating the Colorado School
of Mines in Texas 41-14. Ferris State finished the season 14 and 1.

LOTTERY JACKPOTS GROW
The Mega Millions jackpot is growing again. No tickets matched all of the numbers
drawn Saturday night so Tuesday's jackpot is worth 465-million dollars. The cash
option will be 250-million. Tonight's Powerball jackpot is worth 158-million dollars.

GAS PRICES
An early Christmas gift for drivers: gas prices in Michigan are down 17 cents from a
week ago, with prices at the pump now averaging $3.07 per gallon for regular
unleaded. Triple-A Michigan says that's a new low for the year.
The highest prices are in Traverse City, where gas is averaging $3.37 a gallon and in
Jackson at $3.23 a gallon. The lowest gas price averages are in Marquette at $2.94
and in Flint and Metro Detroit at $2.99 a gallon.
The lower prices come just in time for holiday travel. Three-point-five million
Michiganders are expected to travel 50 miles or more from home over the holidays.

MINOR SHOT-GRAND RAPIDS
Grand Rapids Police are investigating after a minor was hot late yesterday afternoon.
Police reportedly say they were shot in the back and are expected to survive. There's
no word on the motive for the shooting.

FATAL CRASH-SW MI
A 61-year-old man has been killed in a crash in southwest Michigan's Comstock
Township on Sunday. The Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office says the man was
driving an suv at a high rate of speed and tried to pass another vehicle when he lost
control and hit a tree. No one else was in the vehicle.

GRAIN ELEVATOR FIRE
There's a fire at a grain elevator in Saginaw County's Hemlock.... which is west of
Saginaw. The grain elevator reportedly holds corn, beans, and wheat.

CATFISH MOM
A Central Michigan mother is accused of cat-fishing her own daughter and her
daughter's boyfriend.
Police say Kendra Licari (le-car-ee) of Mount Pleasant sent hundreds of harassing texts
and social media messages over the course of about a year.
Licari's accused of using special software to create fake numbers, so the messages
seemed to be coming from her daughter's classmates.
She faces multiple charges, including stalking, and is scheduled for arraignment
Tuesday.

WHITMER INAUGURATION
On New Year's Day, Governor Gretchen Whitmer will be inaugurated for a second term
as Michigan's 49th governor. In a written statement, Whitmer says its the honor of a
lifetime to have the support and trust of millions of Michiganders to continue serving our
beautiful state.
The swearing-in ceremony will begin with a musical performance by the 126th Army
Band of the Michigan National Guard and a flyover by the Michigan Air National
Guard. The event is free to attend, but attendees must RSVP at michiganstrong.org to
receive a complimentary ticket.

ACLU-JEWISH MEETING
Leaders with the Arab and Jewish communities standing in solidarity on Sunday to
draw attention to mental health reform saying a crisis is behind an alleged Anti-Semitic
attack by 35-YEAR old Hassan Chokr outside of Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Hills
earlier this month.
Hussain Chokr the brother of Hassan condemning his brother's actions, citing a long
history of mental illness.
Hassan Chokr is facing two felony counts of ethnic intimidation.

FATAL FIRE-W MI
Two people have died in a fire in west Michigan's Allendale Township over the
weekend. A woman and child were reportedly killed in the mobile home fire Saturday
night in Allendale Meadows trailer park. The cause is being investigated, but
investigators call it suspicious.

FATAL U-P CRASH
A 64-year-old Newberry woman was killed in a two vehicle crash in Lakefield Township
in Luce County Sunday morning. State Police with the Sault Ste. Marie Post say the
crash happened in the area of M-28 near County Road 444 when a 19-year-old man
was heading in a Ford F250 east on M-28 when he crossed the center line and his a
minivan driven by the woman, Alice Nelson. She died at the scene, while the other
driver was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and released. Alcohol
is believed to be a factor in the crash and the investigation continues.

NORTHWOOD E-SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIP
The Northwood University Esports team has won its second world
championship....beating more than 50 of the best collegiate teams to win the Red Bull
Campus Clutch World Final on Friday in Brazil. Northwood Coach Cody Elsen says to
be in Brazil competing against the best teams in the world was surreal.

PENGUIN UPDATE
Updating a story we told you about last week. A penguin that swallowed a dime at the
John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids is recovering after undergoing an endoscopy (en-dosscuh-pee) to remove the dime. Veterinarian Ryan Colburn says he believes the penguin
ate the dime thinking it was a piece of silver fish....which is part of their diet. The dime
was found during an annual physical exam using a metal detector.
