DEADLY OFFICER INVOLVED SHOOTING
An investigation is underway after a deadly officer involved shooting in mid-Michigan.
State Police say the shooting happened around two o'clock Monday afternoon in a
trailer park in Bath Township, northeast of Lansing. One person was shot and killed.
Bath Township police say the officer involved in the shooting was responding to a
domestic disturbance call. Michigan State Police are conducting the investigation.
INFLATION REDUCTION
The Inflation Reduction Act is now in effect with the new year. Michigan U.S. Senator
Gary Peters says it lowers costs for insulin for seniors on Medicare. Peters says those
who receive their health insurance from the Affordable Care Act, some 270 thousand
Michiganders, will see a reduction in costs...about $800 dollars a year.
HOUSING PERMITS
Higher mortgage rates are to blame for a slowdown in home building permits. That's
according to the Home Builders Association of Southeastern Michigan which reports
139 single-family home permits issued in Macomb, Oakland, Wayne and St. Clair
counties in November. Not including 2020 when the pandemic hit, that is the lowest
number if more than ten years. The report also shows most of the houses that are
being built are custom homes with an average value of more than a half-million dollars.
PVC RECYCLING
New research reveals a way to recycle one of the most produced plastics in the U-S.
According to a new University of Michigan study, polyvinyl chloride plastic, or P-V-C,
could now qualify as recyclable material after scientists discover how to recycle the
material WITHOUT melting it. Plastic is recycled by melting and reforming, but when
PVC is melted, it releases toxins that contaminate all recyclables and causes chemical
burns to plant workers. Researchers are now using electrochemistry to find a way to
recycle PVC plastics without using heat. PVC currently has a zero percent recycling
rate in the U-S.
ROLLING STONE
Detroit and Michigan are well represented on Rolling Stone's new list of the 200
Greatest Singers of all time. Aretha Franklin was number one, with some other big
Motown names also making the cut. Other Michigan singers on the top 200 list include
Stevie Wonder at number 7, Smokey Robinson at 23, Diana Ross at 87, and Martha
Reeves at 151. Michigan's Iggy Pop was also on the list at 176, followed by Bob Seger
at 181.
MEGA MILLIONS JACKPOT
Many people may be dreaming of becoming a multi-millionaire. Tonight's Mega
Millions jackpot is worth at least 785-million dollars. The cash option is 395-million
before taxes. Lottery officials say there have been only three previous occasions
where the Mega Millions jackpot has grown beyond 700 million dollars, and all three
times those jackpots continued on past one billion bucks. One of those billion dollarplus jackpots was won by a group from Michigan nearly two years ago.
GAS PRICES UP
The new year has brought with it an increase in gas prices. According to AAA
Michigan, the statewide average has jumped 21 cents from last week. Drivers are now
paying an average of $3.20 for a gallon of regular unleaded. That price is 29 cents less
than this time last month but 10 cents more than this time last year.
The highest gas prices are in Metro Detroit and Saginaw where drivers are paying an
average of $3.21 a gallon. The lowest price is in Benton Harbor at $3.15 a gallon.
