Spring is here and summer is not too far off, which includes upcoming Independence Day celebrations in Alpena.

To prepare, the Alpena City Council has approved a new 3 year contract with Wolverine Fireworks Display, Inc. to provide the Alpena 4th of July Fireworks show.

The City holds licenses for the event, but funding is provided by the community, in part through Alpena Chamber of Commerce fundraising efforts.

In total, the fireworks contract calls for a cost of 19 thousand 500 dollars ($19,500) for the show, which includes fireworks, insurance and labor.

By the way, the annual Fireworks Fundraising Kickoff will be this Thursday (25). With a fundraising goal of 23-thousand dollars ($23,000.00), it will be held outside of the WATZ studios on Prentiss Street, where drive up donations can be made and are encouraged.

The Chamber Ambassador group will be outside of the studio collecting donations and passing out fireworks bracelets between 7 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.
