A Spruce woman was arrested for embezzlement back in early March.

The Michigan State Police (MSP) Alpena Post was contacted in September of 2018 to investigate an embezzlement complaint made by the owners of Ossineke Building Supply. The owners suspected Gena Carstens had embezzled the money while she had worked there.

A lengthy investigation followed which included multiple interviews, search warrants of bank records, and an audit of the company’s financial records over a seven-year period. The alleged embezzlement began in 2010 and continued until 2018 in an amount exceeding $200,000. An arrest warrant was issued for 58-year-old Gena Renee Carstens from Spruce on February 22nd. She turned herself in on March 1st at the MSP Alpena Post and posted bond.

Business owner Annette Carstens saying, "The loss of funds caused the business to fail, and we were forced to close the doors March 6th, 2018."

Carstens and her attorney waived her arraignment this week in the 88th District Court in Alpena where she was charged with one count Embezzlement over $100,000.

She is scheduled to appear for a probable cause hearing on April 1st, and preliminary exam on April 8th, in 88th District Court where it would be decided if the case should be bound over to Circuit Court.
