District Health Department Number 4 say they have been notified of four confirmed cases of the Coronavirus variant, known as "B.1.1.7" in Alpena County.

Officials say the individuals completed isolation. The cases were identified through routine active surveillance by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The variant spreads more easily and is believed to be more contagious.

Despite the new variant, based on available evidence, officials say current tests and vaccines for Coronavirus also work against it. Protective actions people have been practicing before will also prevent the spread of the new variant.
