APS Experiencing Increase in School Associated Covid Cases

Alpena Public Schools is experiencing an increase in school associated Covid cases.

63 student and 3 staff cases were reported in the month of October. An average of 20 student cases a week were reported the last three weeks of the month. This week the district is on pace to surpass that average.

As of noon Tuesday (November 2nd), 12 students and 4 staff members have reported being Covid positive.

Districts across the state have had to close their schools due to chronic staffing shortages made worse by Covid related absences. Alpena Public Schools is no different.

Officials say the staffing shortage for APS means that they are only able to retain a very small reserve of substitute staff for all positions in the district. When a teacher, bus driver, custodian, Instructional Assistant or other valuable employee is absent, it's hard to find a replacement.

Alpena Public School officials are encouraging staff, students and community to remain vigilant in taking steps to help reduce the spread in schools and in the community.
