Alpena Council Approves Increased Ambulance Rates

Alpena City Council members have approved of new ambulance rates.

City Fire Chief Bill Forbush says that, periodically, third party insurers like Blue Cross, Medicare and Medicaid adjust the allowable rates that they will pay for medical services. Ambulance services that do not adjust their rates accordingly “literally leave money on the table”.

Also, the impact of the pandemic and the MidMichigan Ambulance presence in Alpena leaves them with less operating revenue, so any increase in revenue streams would be “advantageous”.

Based on new adjustments, officials recommended multiple ambulance rate increases.

They included increasing Advanced Life Support 1 (ALS1) from $575.00 to $611.89, increasing Advanced Life Support 2 (ALS2) from $750.00 to $785.00 and Critical Care (MICU Transfer) from $875.00 to $918.00.

Council approved the increase by unanimous vote.
