Alpena Council Moving Forward with Recreational Marijuana Facilities Wed, 10 Nov 2021 06:03:26 EST
Alpena's City Council and Planning Commission members got together in special session at Alpena City Hall Tuesday (November 9th) to discuss the future of all allowing recreational marijuana establishments in the City of Alpena and the stage is set for council to move forward with it.
As previously reported, voters approved of recreational marijuana use in 2018, but local governments can prohibit or regulate sales.
After public comment, council members discussed the idea and the majority were in favor of moving forward with having recreational facilities. Denise Cline of the Northeast Michigan Council of Governments showed both governing bodies a draft ordinance of what it could look like if recreational marijuana would exist in Alpena. The rules for recreational marijuana will be similar to medical marijuana rules.
Council decided to move forward with the potential ordinance, with staff refining and cleaning the language further before final adoption of the ordinance.
Council will have a first reading on the ordinance at their December 6th meeting.
