Winfield Sentenced - Nine Months In Jail - Sex Offender Registry and Probation

A former special education teacher, Heather Winfield, was sentenced in Alpena Circuit Court Friday.

After a three week jury trial found Winfield not guilty on a majority of charges levied against her, Winfield was found guilty of Accosting a Minor for Immoral Purposes. She was sentenced to nine months in the county jail, along with having to register as a sex offender for 25 years.

Winfield, a former Alpena and Hillman teacher was accused of multiple Criminal Sexual Conduct charges, allegedly having sexual relations with a male student between 2016 and 2018 who is now 17 years old.

The trial and sentencing was presided over by 33rd Circuit Court Judge Roy Hayes of Charlievoix, due to a potential conflict of interest, who sentenced Winfield to the maximum he could.

Winfield was immediately taken into custody and led out of the courtroom in handcuffs and transported to the Alpena County Jail.


Winfield was originally charged with;

- Two counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct 1st Degree involving a child under 13,
- One count of Criminal Sexual Conduct 1st Degree during the commission of a felony,
- Criminal Sexual Conduct 3rd Degree involving a child between 13 and 15,
- Criminal Sexual Conduct 2nd Degree involving a child under 13,
- Accosting a minor for Immoral Purposes,
- Using a Computer to Commit a Crime (Dropped on September 23rd)
