Alpena Recycling Program Gets Million Dollar Grant

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy - or EGLE - has awarded the Alpena Resource Recovery board a million dollar grant for constructing a 5-and a half million dollar recycling facility.

Coming up with the rest of the money is a big question. The County of Alpena has been asked by the recycling authority to donate up to 2-million out of 5-point five million dollars received in American Rescue Plan Act funding, or at least provide a million dollars in match money. The board took no action on the request at a recent session.

As reported earlier, Commissioners previously agreed to a 15 acre lease or sale of airport property to the recycling board for construction of the recycling center. However, the Federal Aviation Administration ruled a sale or ownership transfer is not possible, but a lease might, and that has yet to be approved.
