Alpena Commissioners Debate Recording and Putting Sessions On YouTube Channel

Alpena County Commissioners recently had discussion about recording their sessions and putting them on a YouTube Channel.

At present, Finance and regular board meetings are streamed live on Zoom, and public comment is even accepted. But meetings are not recorded and County Administrator Mary Catherine Hannah asked if those should be recorded and put on line for public consumption.

In discussion, it was noted that recordings would not be the official record of actions or discussion by the board, only the official meeting minutes serve as the official record. It was pointed out that other municipalities routinely put meeting videos on line and it would be advantageous for the public who could view recordings at their leisure.

While board members seemed to approve of the concept, it was decided to have Hannah and the Information Technology department research the logistics of establishing a YouTube Channel, policy of maintaining archives or length of time posted on line, and legal issues if any.
