January is National Radon Awareness Month, and local health officials say you should test your house every two years.

Radon is an odorless, colorless gas that can't be easily detected, and long-term exposure raises a chance of developing lung cancer, which kills more men and women than any other cancer.

District Health Department No. 4 is offering test kits this month where you can “give a can, get a kit”. Bring in a non-perishable, non-expired food item to be donated to a local food pantry, and you get a free radon test kit. Otherwise, kits are $5.00 without a donation.

Officials say there are Elevated levels of radon are present in 7-24% of homes in Alpena, Cheboygan, Montmorency and Presque Isle Counties.

You can stop by any District Four Health Department office during business hours to “give a can, get a kit”.
