Alpena Commissioners Eye Splitting Sheriff Department Budget Thu, 13 Jan 2022 06:04:36 EST
During a Finance / Ways and Means Committee meeting Tuesday (11), Alpena County Commissioners debated the merits of splitting the Alpena County Sheriff Office budget.
One ledger would cover more routine operations of the office such as deputy patrols, associated grants, equipment, supplies, animal control, patrol vehicles, administrative or other supplemental programs.
The other set of books would focus on correctional and jail operations, ranging from inmate related expenses, or equipment and physical operation of the facility.
Officials say the sheriff office budget was split in the past, but was apparently merged in an effort of consolidation. But much has changed and splitting the two would make it easier to track expenses of each.
It will be a lot of work for the Treasurer, Clerk and Sheriff administrators, as 155 line items will have to be split up and realigned over the next few months.
