Decisions - Many Factors Making A Snow Day Call

It may seem strange at times, and others more obvious, but Alpena Public School officials say there are a lot of factors that go into making a decision to call off school due to weather.

When weather is a concern, the Superintendent and Transportation Director get in their cars at 3:00 a.m. to drive on several most challenging roads to check the conditions, and try to predict what things will be like at the time students are picked up and dropped off for the coming school day.

Weather radar reports are reviewed, and there is consultation with the Alpena County Road Commission, and other Superintendents from surrounding counties.

When temperature related, the same general process is followed, but there is no automatic temperature policy.

Ultimately, it is a parent's right to decide if it is safe for children to attend based on individual situations, and you can call the schools to request an excused absence, with an expectation to make up any missed coursework.
