A Go fund Me effort is underway to raise money to establish a civil war memorial monument at the Alpena County Courthouse.

The Alpena Chapter of the Sons of Union Veterans is attempting to raise 30-thousand dollars ($30,000.00) in their Alpena Cannon Memorial Campaign to honor 170 Civil War veterans buried in Alpena County.

One of those was George Maltz, who fought with the 4th Michigan in the bloody wheatfield at the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2nd, 1863. The 4th Michigan began the day with 403 men and lost 165.

That included Colonel Harrison H. Jeffords, who became the highest-ranked officer to be bayoneted as he attempted to save the Regiment's flag.

The goal is to have the funds raised by Memorial Day, 2023.
