Smoldering Piles From Fire At DPI Cause Smoke Issues On Alpena Northside

Smoldering embers in a Friday fire that occurred in a cooker tower at Decorative Panels International (DPI) in Alpena continued to plague Northside residents into Sunday.

Alpena Fire Chief Bill Forbush says Friday evening, heavy winds contributed to a significant fire as firefighters and DPI staff worked well into the night controlling the fires in the cooker tower and two other buildings.

But several very large piles of material downwind continued to smolder over the weekend. The situation required constant use of heavy equipment and hose lines to stir up the material and expose material for extinguishment, which may still take a few days due to characteristics and volume of material involved.

Changes in wind direction blanketed the northside with smoke causing concern from residents. With rain in the forecast, that may help, but smoke may still linger as the material is still smoldering, but residents are not in any immediate danger and the smoke is not hazardous. However residents with respiratory illnesses such as asthma or COPD are advised to leave their windows closed if possible.

If things change, fire crews will adjust accordingly
