Alpena Council Considers Fluoride Use in Drinking Water

Alpena City Council members continue to debate the issue of adding fluoride in city and township water.

Last December, a public hearing was held concerning discontinuation with some residents opposed to adding the chemical, and a slight majority favored its use which helps prevent tooth decay. No further action was taken, but since then, the price has continued to increase, and there are ongoing supply issues. Those factors and hazardous conditions of alternate chemicals have a lot of public agencies discontinuing adding the chemical.

At present, options are temporarily discontinue use until supplies and costs stabilize, use a liquid version which is costly and hazardous to store and use, or discontinue use by this fall when current supplies run out.

At this point, no decision has been made by the council.
