Alpena Road Commission Begins Seal Coat ProgramTue, 21 Jul 2020 16:37:54 EDT
Alpena County Road Commission officials say work begins this week on maintenance sealcoating of several existing paved roads in Alpena County.
Sealcoating is the process of applying emulsified asphalt on an existing paved surface then covering it with crushed stone. Treated roads will also receive an additional coating of emulsion over the top to protect the surface. That process preserves pavement by treating cracks, oxidation, and other pavement distresses. Sealcoating also improves skid resistance of the pavement surface.
Roads in this year’s program include parts of Hubbard Lake, Nicholson Hill, Leer, and Scott Roads. Around 12 miles will be sealcoated, with townships sharing funding 50% of the cost on some roads. The cost to sealcoat a mile is approximately $24,500. .
Common short term concerns are temporary dust or loose stone, bleeding of the emulsion and rough texture, so motorists should be patient and slow down in work areas, or those that have been recently treated.
