Cheboygan County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a fatal crash on US-23 near Freedom Road on Tuesday at 6:49 p.m.
The investigation revealed 18 year old Jason Nixon from Westland MI was traveling north on US-23 operating a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer when he lost control and slid sideways into the south lane in the path of a 2011 Toyota Highlander operated by 36 year old Danny Bushman from Mackinaw City.
The Highlander collided head on into the passenger side of the Trailblazer causing the Trailblazer to flip on its side and the Highlander to run off the roadway. 18 year old John Spohr from Garden City who was the front seat passenger in the Trailblazer, died at the scene.
Nixon and Bushman were both transported to McLaren Petoskey with serious injuries.
It was raining at the time of the crash . Speed and lack of tread on the Trailblazer tires contributed to the crash but alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident.
The accident remains under investigation.
