A joint investigation involving the Michigan State Police Fire Investigation unit and
Lapeer investigators will be conducted to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed
two buildings in downtown Lapeer. Authorities say firefighters from 11 departments
were used to put out the fire that broke out early Saturday morning. People living in
apartments in the buildings were evacuated and were not injured. No cause has been
determined. Along with State Police and the Lapeer Fire Department, the police
department and insurance companies will also be involved in the investigation.


Michigan reported 388 new cases of the coronavirus and 72 deaths Saturday. The
numbers have been dropping since late April. Despite the lower numbers, state and
local health officials are encouraging residents who haven't been vaccinated to get a
shot.


The body of a missing boater has been found in Saginaw Bay, ending a search that
began over the Memorial Day weekend. The Bay County Sheriff says a fisherman
found the body of 29-year-old Cole Zielinski without a life jacket. Zielinski's fiance told
investigators he fell into the water while trying to keep a dog in the boat. She says he
was wearing a life jacket at the time.


A college student working as an elected official is giving out cash in Delhi Township.
TyJuan Thirdgill serves as a township official in the Lansing area. He announced on
Facebook that starting June 12, he's giving away almost half his 11-THOUSAND-dollar
salary to those in need, adding up to $400 a month. He's already given away $300.
Whether it's used for gas to get to work or for rent, he says he wants to restore faith in
public servants.


The Michigan Republican Party has filed a complaint with the state over Governor
Gretchen Whitmer's re-election campaign paying for her use of a private jet to visit her
ailing father in Florida. The law lets elected officials use political funds for incidental
expenses incurred while carrying out government work. Republican party leaders say
the trip was personal and not for official business. Democrats call the complaint
"bogus." Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson could levy a fine if she finds a violation.


State police are looking for a 40-year-old man, suspected in a sexual assault and
homicide near Mount Pleasant in Union Township Sunday morning. Police are looking
fr Isaiah " Zeke" Gardenhire, who's six foot one and weighs 180 pounds. He has brown
hair and brown eyes. Anyone with information is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers/


Someone was allegedly held at knifepoint and abducted at Holland State Park over the
weekend. Deputies with the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office say they were called
Saturday evening, saying the suspect forced to victim to get into a vehicle and driving
then to an unknown location and was later released. The victim suffered minor injuries
and was taken to a local hospital. The suspect is described as a white man in his 20's ,
5 foot 10 to six feet tall with brown hair and weighs 175 pounds.


A group of student athletes and a coach in the U-P are being called heroes after
another teammate collapsed. A high school track team in Crystal Falls , north of Iron
Mountain, was practicing in April when a sophomore fell over , had a seizure and
stopped breathing. His teammates and coach performed CPR and was rushed to the
hospital. Greydon Fischer is fine today and hopes to get clearance to join the track
team again soon.


Chaos in Greektown in Detroit as police attempt to break up a melee in the street. A
video posted to Instagram shows two large groups going head-to-head before police
intervened early Sunday morning. Some in the crowd also attacking officers. Several
people were arrested and multiple cops were injured. Investigators are reviewing the
social media videos and body camera footage to learn more about the incident.
Detroit Police have increased patrols downtown due to a recent increase in illegal
activity, especially in Greektown.


A warning for drivers about the risk to children and pets during what is expected to be
the hottest weather so far this summer season. As temperatures hit the 90s, it takes
just a matter of minutes for the inside of a car to become dangerously hot. Triple A says
many heatstroke deaths are accidents, where a parent or caregiver forgets the child is
in the back seat. To prevent this, never leave a child or animal unattended in a car,
even if the air conditioning is running. You can put your wallet and cell phone in the
back seat as a reminder to check before leaving the vehicle.


A pregnant woman is assaulted while driving on a Detroit freeway. Police say the
woman was on I-94 near Cadieux yesterday afternoon when a male passenger
threatened to kill her and grabbed the steering wheel, trying to crash the vehicle. The
woman was able to stop the car and run away. But the suspect chased her and,
according to witnesses, tried to strangle her, throwing her onto the ground. Troopers
found the 4-months pregnant woman lying in the middle of the road. She was taken to
a hospital. The suspect was arrested. Charges are pending.


The cause of a fire in an apartment in southeast Michigan's Pittsfield Charter Township
is being investigated, but a woman and her young son made it out safely early Sunday.
The building was evacuated, but no one was injured. There was damage to the
woman's apartment and smoke and water damage to other parts of the apartment
building.


Flint Police are investigating after a man and a woman were shot and killed early
Sunday and a second woman was critically injured. M-Live reports Michigan State
Police say officers found a 28-year-old man dead at about three Sunday morning and
two women with gunshot wounds. They were taken to the hospital, where a 33-year old woman died and the other, who's 28 , is in critical condition. Anyone with
information is asked to call Flint Police of Crimestoppers.

Police say the body was found north of downtown . No foul play is suspected and
investigation is underway. Anyone with information should call police.


A former Detroit City Councilman is due in court after pleading guilty to
misconduct in office. Gabe Leland admitted to taking a 75-hundred dollar campaign
contribution in cash... and free car repairs in exchange for his vote on a land deal.
Under a sentencing agreement, Leland will face no jail time and a separate federal
bribery case against him will be dismissed.
