More Teacher Retirements And Prospects Dim

Data from the Michigan Public School Employee's Retirement System finds a 44% increase in midyear retirements during the pandemic compared to the 2019-20 school year.

Data shows 749 teachers left the public school classrooms in the middle of the school year. Many teachers the past school year experienced one like never before with educators working from home and unable to comment with students face-to-face.

According to data from the U.S. Department of Education, enrollment at Michigan's teacher preparation programs dropped 70% in eight years, the second worst rate in the nation.
