The Alpena Public School board of Education gave the green light to conceptual plans detailing construction of a new Transportation Center in exchange for a property trade.

As reported earlier, a developer, Vautgrand Holdings, had expressed interest in acquiring the existing transportation center property to raze it and construct a building to house grocery retailer Aldi. An additional restaurant or retail store is also planned for the site. Before anything would happen, the developer would construct a new 10,000 square foot .transportation facility for the district near Wildcat Stadium.

Plans were presented and recommended for approval last week by the boards Property Committee. Earlier some school officials had walked the area where the building would be placed and recommended some changes, which the developer incorporated into plans. Mechanics, transportation and facilities officials had also gave their approval.

Now the conceptual drawings will be committed to actual blueprints, with future approvals required from state and local officials, and eventual final approval by the board.

School officials always maintained that the deals would have to be at no cost to the district, and getting something of equal or greater value.

If all moves as planned, a rough timeline would be starting construction and the new facility this summer, with building occupancy being late this or early next year.
