The Michigan Community Service Commission is encouraging Michigan residents to volunteer during April, which is National Volunteer Month.

To support volunteers, the Michigan Community Service Commission recently announced it will fund 58 Global Youth Service Day volunteer projects totaling $24,800 in grants engaging nearly 5,000 volunteers who will serve to benefit Michigan communities. Projects include providing child-size masks to youth, planting community gardens and meeting other community needs.

Two projects funded will be at Alcona Community School. Students will be cleaning State Park Beach, campground, and surrounding areas along with planting native plants in the gardens to sustain Michigan's natural habitat. Also, students will be participating in a can and bottle drive in the community to raise money for the animal shelter, clean the shelter grounds, plant gardens and interact with the animals.
