Council Discusses Potential Blair Street Pier Repairs

During their most recent meeting (April 19th), Alpena City Council members discussed the potential for repairing the Blair Street Pier.

Officials say, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Lake Huron is expected to be below last years’ water levels which were some of the highest recorded. With the anticipated lower water levels, Engineering staff reached out to a local contractor to determine a cost for repairs to the Blair Street Pier.

The cost to replace what existed prior to the damage is estimated to be below $70,000. Funding would be taken from fund balance to accomplish the work.

Although most council members were fine with moving forward with posting bids for the project, Mayor Pro Tem Cindy Johnson suggested the possibility of seeking out grant money so less will be taken from the city's fund balance.

With that suggestion, council directed staff to still move forward with posting bids while at the same time searching for potential grants.
