Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has signed an Executive Order (No. 2021-5), which creates the Michigan Jail Reform Advisory Council, and has appointed an Alpena County Commissioner to serve on the commission.

Bill Peterson, of Alpena, is a commissioner with Alpena County, and is appointed to represent a member of a board of county commissioners. His term begins immediately and runs through March 31, 2023.

Earlier, Peterson was appointed to serve on a task force to develop recommended changes to local jail systems in the state, many of which were adopted by lawmakers.

The new Council will facilitate, assist with, monitor, and evaluate the successful implementation of jail reform legislation throughout the state of Michigan.
