Alpena Mayor Matt Waligora and Alpena City Council members have issued a proclamation recognizing Friday (April 30th), as Arbor Day.

The holiday is recognized on the last Friday in April every year and, to keep its "Tree City USA" designation, issuance is required as the city has been designated as a "Tree City USA" community. This is the 22nd year Alpena has received this national recognition.

The city proclamation of Arbor Day states that, in 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees and the holiday was first observed with the planting of more than a million trees in Nebraska.

The proclamation also encourages "to plant trees to promote the well-being of this and future generations."
